Any recommendations or suggestions to Camilla are welcome.

You are staying on a working apple and pear farm. We grow the tastiest apples, which are mostly exported.  Our family spent hours on end enjoying the Theewaterskloof Dam and with the perfect location we built the Lake Lodge in 2010 to share the idyllic location with kindred spirits. Over the years it has become so popular with large groups of friends and family. We hope you will enjoy our little slice of nature, and feel at home here.

CLEANING

Cleaning up after your stay is included, however if you would like someone to come in to clean while you are here, Katrina can clean up a lot of mess in the kitchen and lounge areas in about 2 hours. Her rate is R50 / hour, please pay her directly in cash. If you do not have cash, please SnapScan the amount to us and we will ensure she receives it. Please let us know about the SnapScan payment and use Katrina as a reference. If you would like Katrina to come in, please pre-arrange with Camilla on 0713512048, or contact Katrina directly during your stay on 0787299424 (or her son, Freddie on 0736795895 if you can’t get through to her or if you can’t speak Afrikaans). Please allow at least a half day’s notice for Katrina.

FIRE WOOD

Please pay R30 per bundle into the honesty box below the information board or make a payment via SnapScan using “firewood” as a reference. This is a community project and all proceeds go to the community. If it is difficult to count bundles, please make a contribution that you deem fair for your usage. Patrick will gladly assist you should you require more wood.

TIME TO GO

  • When it’s time to go home, kindly do so before 11h00, unless a late check out has been arranged. We are usually very flexible as we generally only have guests checking in on the same day or next day over the peak holiday seasons, so we will do our best to accommodate you.
  • Please close all the doors and leave the keys?.
  • Leave all used beds unmade
  • Leave used towels  on the bathroom floor
  • Please phone or message Katrina to let her know you are have left – 0787299424 (she will happily make sure that any leftover food doesn’t go to waste)
  • We suggest going via Franschhoek on a Sunday to avoid Sir Lowry’s Pass traffic. Drive safely and hope to see you again soon  🙂

SECURITY

If you go out for the day please lock up. We have never had any security incidents on the farm but we do live in South Africa so it’s always best to take precaution.

You may notice a vehicle doing patrols at night , this is the  security company who do routine checks around the farm a few times each night.

WORKING FARM AND USE OF CHEMICALS

We are a working farm and do spray chemicals on the fruit trees throughout the year, if you require more information about this, please contact us. If an orchard has a red flag present please stay away from the orchard.

MIGGIES

Being so close to the water does mean lots of miggies in the summer months on a calm night. They don’t bite, but be warned and close all windows and doors when you turn on a light.

THE DAM & BOATING:

The Theewaterskloof Dam is available for you to use if you bring your own paddle skis/canoes or motorised boats. The dam is also completely safe for swimming. All motorised boats are to be registered at the Theewaterskloof Sports Club before using them on the dam and all skippers must be licensed.

Contact Theewaterskloof Sports Club: 028 840 1334

GAMES:

Please enjoy all the games in the games room, but do let us know of any breakages so that we can replace items for others to enjoy. If there is a special sports game you can’t miss out on, we recommend the Theewaterskloof Sports Club.

RUNNING/HIKING/WALKING ON THE FARM

You are welcome to walk and run on the farm. You can also cross the main road and go up the mountain where we have made a hiking trail. To access – cross the road (can also be crossed under the road near the farm entrance) and make your way to the gate for our Mountain Eco Pods, walk up that road and you will see a path to your left with a sign “Hiking Paths”. Walk up there and you will see the path which starts just to the left of the reservoir. This trail is not very challenging, however it is definitely a hike and not just a walk. It’s about a 3km long loop from start to finish, plus the distance if you walk directly from Lake Lodge. You are welcome to traverse the mountain further but there are no formal trails yet.

LUNCH/EATING OUT

If you would like to eat out there are a few options in the area:

    1. Kelkiewyn in Villiersdorp has basic lunch options like toasted sandwiches etc. https://www.facebook.com/KelkiewynVilliersdorpOfficial/
    2. Alwyn Vincent in Villiersdorp is also simple fare and has pizzas you can order. It recently started the occasional sushi night, please call them to enquire. https://alwyn-vincent-bistro.business.site/
    3. Melting Pot at Oak Valley is excellent for Asian fusion fine dining. Bookings are essential. https://www.themeltingpotcafeteria.com/
    4. Franschhoek has a large variety of options. For more relaxed dining we recommend Tuk Tuk Microbrewery or Hey Joe, and for fancier fare try Chef’s Warehouse at Maison or Protégé, the latter serves a great breakfast.
    5. Botriver also has some good options, a favourite being Farro at Gabrielskloof for lunch and/or wine tasting. https://www.farrofoodandwine.com/menu

WINE TASTING

    1. Our local Kelkiewyn has a lovely refurbished tasting room where you can taste all Villiersdorp Cellar has to offer.
    2. Stettyn Wines just past Villiersdorp offers a great tasting and if you have time you can settle into a cheese board too.
    3. The Elgin and Franschhoek Valleys are abundant in wine tasting options. We recommend Paul Wallace in Elgin (by appointment) and Oak Valley. Haute Cabriere is just a stone’s throw away over the Franschhoek pass.

ELGIN RAILWAY MARKET

The Elgin Railway Market is a must-do if you are wanting to go home via Somerset West. It’s set in a refurbished old apple shed where you can watch the old steam train’s arrival from the deck.

CAPE CANOPY TOUR

Voted one of the top experiences in the world and the second best tourist attraction in Africa, it is a must for the adrenalin seekers and adventurous at heart. Call 021 300 0501 to book as bookings are essential.
